Leisure and Culture
Down Catalunya’s cultural programs aim to respond to the needs of people with intellectual disabilities. At the same time, these activities make it possible to raise awareness about the true face of people with Down syndrome.
Down Catalunya organizes an annual meeting of the different groups of self-managers of our entities. Throughout a weekend, between 50 and 60 people with Down syndrome from different Catalan localities take part in talks, training workshops and cultural outings.
The fun and playful day of Port Aventura is also the moment of the encounter of families of Down Catalunya. Hundreds of families with children or siblings with Down syndrome are reunited at the welcome ceremony held at the Great Imperial Theater and throughout the day at the theme park facilities.
We organize a journalism course in order to provide our students with analysis tools of the present time. Students conduct interviews that are disseminated through our Youtube channel. Among others, they have interviewed Luis Enrique, Ona Carbonell, Ada Colau or Cardinal Martínez Sistach.
Indoor Soccer Tournament
Since 2012, and in collaboration with the Masnou Interdynamic Club, on the first Saturday of July Down Catalunya organizes a futsal tournament at El Masnou (Barcelona). Several teams formed by young people with and without disabilities compete in simultaneous matches throughout the morning. In the end friendship and inclusion are always the winners.
Down Catalunya has collaborated in the start-up and consolidation of the Barcelona Universitari Club (BUC) inclusive rugby section, which today includes a number of young people with Down syndrome. During the years 2015, 2016 and 2017 Down Catalunya and the BUC have organized three meetings of inclusive rugby in order to announce this sport modality.
We also support any initiative aimed at the inclusion and participation of people with Down syndrome in all types of activities. To mention just a few, we have collaborated in the development of paragliding courses (with the Organyà Xperience club), sailing, cinema (with SGAE), a workshop on archeology (with CSIC), etc.
